FAQ

Yes. E-bikes are legal to ride on Australian roads and shared pathways when they meet the relevant national and state regulations.

Most Australian states and territories follow standards based on the European EN15194 e-bike regulations. To be classified as a legal electric bicycle, an e-bike generally must:

* Have a motor with a continuous power output of up to 250 watts (some states may allow higher limits under specific classifications).
* Operate primarily through pedal assistance (pedelec), where the motor provides assistance only while the rider is pedalling.
* Not rely solely on a throttle for propulsion.
* Provide motor assistance only up to 25 km/h.
* Comply with all applicable road rules, including helmet requirements and local cycling regulations.

No. If your e-bike complies with the applicable regulations, you do not need a driver’s licence, registration, or insurance to ride it in Australia.

Because regulations can vary slightly between states and territories, we recommend checking the latest requirements with your local transport authority before riding.

Your throttle speed is limited to 6 km/h to comply with Australian regulations for e-bikes. Higher throttle speeds are not permitted for use on public roads and paths in Australia. If unrestricted throttle operation is available, it may only be used on private property where local laws allow it.

It’s up to you to ride within the rules.
